Route from downtown to Tsawwassen

Postby walter23 » Wed Oct 28, 2009 10:05 pm

Is there a sane route for a 50cc scooter? Obviously the tunnel is out, but what about the Alex Fraser? I'm new to the area, don't know the bridges very well.

Obviously it would take awhile (I'm thinking 2 hours), but is it doable?

You can still take the tunnel, just stay in the right lane and maintain speed. People will honk, but you can still do it.

You'll still get honked at riding up the Alex Fraser as the grade is long and steep for a 50cc.

The MVA was changed to allow limited speed motorcycles, but motor assisted cycles are prohibited from highways. All about the vehicle being able to maintain a safe driving speed.

Walter ...

Hi!

The subject of getting to Victoria via the ferry at Tsawwassen has been extensively covered:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=550&p=1737&hilit=Ferry#p1737

This will give you the options available.

Going through the tunnel is illegal for a 50cc scoot.

There is a revision as there is a contradictory section where you must not be less than 50km/h on a highway and no greater than 80km/h unless otherwise posted.

A scooter is capable of over 50km/h, thus if you can maintain your speed in the tunnel you can ride it.

Not to argue, but here is the law:

Except as authorized by a permit issued by the Minister of Transportation, and except for crossing a highway at an intersection, use of any highway named in Schedule 1 by the following is prohibited at all times:

vehicles drawn by animals
livestock, as defined in the Livestock Act
form implements and farm machinery, whether self-propelled or towed
pedestrians, unless attending a disabled vehicle
vehicles incapable of maintaining a minimum speed of 60 km/h on level
road, except construction or maintenance equipment owned or hired by the
Ministry of Transportation while working on or travelling to or from a work site
located on a highway named in Schedule 1

The word "maintaining" is key to this discussion. Few 50cc scoots are capable of maintaing a minimum speed of 60 km/h along Highway 99, especially at the point of coming up out of the Massey Tunnel at either end.

Also, the Massey Tunnel is an ugly one on any motorbike. There is very little shoulder, just a wall to drive into in the instance where a cager decides to cut you off (been there, nearly done that).

Yeah, even if it it was legal, there's no way in hell I'd go through that tunnel on a scooter that tops out at 60 and might get bogged down to 35 coming out... not gonna happen.

Thanks for the link to the other discussion.

I have driven many many times through the George Massey Tunnel on my way to Point Roberts or the Ferry and back.

My scooter rips downhill into the tunnel at 80kph and pops out at about 60kph. I have a 50cc 2 stroke that has plenty of power to keep me moving with traffic. When there is rush hour traffic, it makes it even better for me as it slows down the traffic considerably.

I always get on the last entrance and get off at the first exit.

According to the "law" as someone has posted already, most scooters should be able to navigate the tunnel, as most scooters are able to maintian a constant 60kph on level ground.

If you have an underpowered scooter maybe don't do it, although even if you do slow down the traffic down a bit, the driver behind you may be frustrated, but you'll only be slowing them down for 60 seconds, they can speed right back up as you peel off. 95% of drivers when I've driven through have been cool.

If you are an easily intimidated rider, don't do it.

If you don't know how to ride defensively, just drive a car instead. You'll be afraid of everything riding your scooter and when people ride fearfully on 2 wheels, they don't have the decision making ability to make decisive decisions in panic situations. They just lock up in fear.
